Amelia Finegan, also affectionately known as Aunt Amy…Mama... Granny.... was born on September 1st, 1916 to Adeline and Joseph Cover, in Merehouse Buxton, St Ann Jamaica. She was the 6th of 11 children.
She was the wife of Ernest Finegan of Patrick’s Field, Carney, St. Ann, whom she met and married in 1949.
Together Amelia and Earnest raised a blended family of their daughter Dorreth and son Joseph with Amelia's first Daughter Gloria. She was a mother of three but at the same time a mother of many. Despite the normal standard of the day of having several children, her womb only brought three into the world but her home brought many more. Her house was always full, even when it was tight there was always room for one more. Some of those children were informally adopted. As the older children grew and moved on there were always younger ones coming, it never stopped and the matriarch never grew weary.
She was a grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, great aunt and to many a great friend.
This wonderful lady experienced success in so many areas of her life.
She became a seamstress which established her as an independent young woman early in her life. A skill that helped her run her household. She was fondly referred to as Empress Amelia.
Amelia was the daughter of a Baptist minister and grew up loving the Lord. She grew in faith and as time went on she always demonstrated an openness to have a better relationship with her Lord. She was the spiritual guardian of her family and as her faith grew she sought to know more about her Lord as she then became a Methodist.
In the early 1970s Amelia heard the unique message of the Seventh-day Adventist church, became convicted of this new found truth and was baptized. This woman of faith helped influence everyone who came to know her.
If there is one word to describe Amelia it would be peacemaker. Most often, if not in every prayer, Amelia would quote Psalm 34:14 “depart from evil and do good, seek peace and preserve it.”
Another one of her favorite passages was Psalm 40, “I waited patiently on the Lord and He inclined unto me and heard my cry.”
She allowed her life to shine as a light before her children and others who came in her path. The life she led has brought her husband and children to come to know the Lord.
Ten years after she recommitted her life to Christ as a commandment keeping Christian, her husband who was a Catholic recommitted his life to Christ as they walked together, putting their faith and trust in God.
A woman of great faith, a woman of great sacrifice; blessed by God with nearly 99 years of life, of which all her formative and adult years she chose to live for Him…Amelia is now resting in Him.
Amelia... Aunt Amy... Mama…Granny.... We look forward in hope of that glorious day when our Lord will give to her the reward, as one who has lived by faith.
